Living Walls Conference . The Walls

Atlanta was lucky enough to feature many very talented local and international artists for the The Living Walls Conference.
12 legal walls were given to the artists to make their mark in Atlanta and many more walls may now be seen around the city with these artist’s work.
Lectures with topics on urbanism, street art, public spaces, urban agriculture, transit and an event at Eyedrum, were the culmination of months of planning and preparation for The Living Walls Conference. It had the purpose of opening up dialogue focused on street art and its role in engaging public space.
RiPO, Swampy, Shaun Thurston, Doodles, Feral Child, Marco Sueño, Greg Mike, Hugh Leeman, Jason Kofke, Michi, RiPO, Remed, Never and Nasdaq, Gaia and Faber all had walls in different locations. You can see many of them here.

Living Walls Conference . The Event at Eyedrum

The Living Walls Conference brought 50+ local and international street artists together for the purpose of opening up dialogue about public spaces and street art.
In this country of consumers where advertisements are inescapable, the purpose of street art and the use of public space is so important.
I am really impressed by the selection of artists. Many were flown into Atlanta and given legal walls so they can make their mark. All the walls at Eyedrum are covered and many other walls around the city now have these artist’s work on them.
Names like RiPO, Swampy, The Paper Twins, Never, Michi, Doodles, Miso, Faber, Marco Sueño, Shaun Thurston, Greg Mike, Feral Child, Hugh Leeman, Jason Kofke, Pesimo, Jess Hinshaw…the list goes on and you can see the line up here.
The turnout was great and art was everywhere. It looked as if a bomb of wheat paste and spray paint had exploded in Eyedrum. Every available wall had something on it as you can see from the pictures. Very different from Eyedrum’s semi bare walls in a visually inspiring way.
This event taught me a lot about public spaces and how they are used/misused and how important those spaces are. I met some good people and some really talented artists.
Already looking forward to the next one.

Sloss Furnaces Photos . Birmingham, AL

I was looking for new places to explore and discovered Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham. Sloss was operated as a iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. After closing it became one of the first industrial sites (and the only blast furnace) in the U.S. to be preserved for public use. Lots say it’s haunted. I don’t doubt it.
Stayed in Aniston that night, saw some mountains and went to Sloss the next morning. Discussed ghosts with a guy doing a documentary. He mentioned Kevin Bacon got slapped by a ghost in the boiler room. I thought that was funny. If I ever meet Kevin Bacon I want to ask him about that.
“Sloss Furnaces produced iron for nearly 90 years, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks offers us a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation.”

Kirkwood Re-Cycle

Kirkwood Re-Cycle. Good friend Ben Pass helps run a custom bike shop in Kirkwood, a neighborhood of Atlanta. They make custom bikes out of old and used bike parts either donated or found. Here he is working on a bike with a large frame for a tall friend of ours.
For more info on Kirkwood Re-Cycle send me a message. These bikes are put together as ordered with a lot of thought and work put into them.

College of Charleston Summer Orientation Photos
I was invited to take photos of the College of Charleston’s Summer Orientation.
Temperatures were over 100 degrees both days but the AC is cold and there are many old and new buildings to duck into to cool off.
The campus stays shady from the streets lined with tall trees mixed with new and old buildings. Refurbished southern style home and brand new business and science buildings all run on power generated by the college. I had a great time taking photos of it as well as meeting the people attending the orientation and working at the school.
Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Lilburn GA

I recently visited the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Lilburn for a friends birthday. It is one of the most peaceful and intricate places I have ever been to. There is no photography inside but you can shoot outside the building.
“A Mandir is a Hindu place of worship – a haven for spirituality and a place of paramount peace. More than 34,000 individual pieces were carved by hand, shipped to the USA, and assembled in Lilburn like a giant 3-D puzzle.”
Van Winkle Gin and Machinery Works
At the time of construction in 1889, the Van Winkle Gin and Machinery Works was one of the largest industrial complexes in Atlanta and the South. The company manufactured the cotton press or “gin” designed, patented and produced by Edward Van Winkle, supplying cotton gins to roughly half the world market. In 1912 the Murray Company of Texas acquired controlling interest in the company and expanded the complex. In 1944 the owners moved the company to another location and eventually left Atlanta.
During World War II, the facility was used as a munitions factory. Currently, the 11-acre complex serves as an artist community with studios and loft space for woodworkers, metalworkers, photographers and painters, but the buildings are not being maintained. The Howard School purchased part of the property in 2002 for its new campus.

Project 365 2009

My first Project 365 ended up being around a Project 168.
Little under half but I’m cool with that.
I had fun doing it and I learned a lot.
I can see the growth and how things have changed. That makes it worth it.
Also, there is nothing like being able to look at your year visually.
New year, new camera and lots of new ideas…Let’s go.

New Juncture Photoshoot
New Toy

So I broke down and bought a DSLR.
I have been planning to for a little while and was originally going to go with a Canon XSi.
I own a Canon point and shoot and I have been very pleased so I thought it would be best to stick with Canon since I have experience with the menu layout.
Every person I talked to had a different answer about the Nikon vs. Canon thing so that didn’t help.
Nikon had a great deal on the D3000 on Black Friday. Came with a case, a book and a 2gb memory card for $499. I played with Luvsick Media’s D3000 some and since we want to shoot professionally (weddings, product/food etc.) so this will be easier because we can use each others lenses and camera bodies if we need too.
So far I have been very pleased with the D3000. I haven’t had a chance to really get into it but I definitely plan to.
My first trip was to Oakland Cemetery.
